Thomas Rengstorf Associates designed the landscape architecture for the Shuksan Middle School, Bellingham School District. The design concept integrates circular geometry to organize activity zones for gathering, studying, and playing, and to facilitate pedestrian and vehicular circulation. Color, texture and scoring patterns integrated in the walkways accent key areas engage efficient wayfinding from the parking lot, student drop off zones and campus thoroughfares.

Campus planting includes natives, drought tolerant plants and seasonal displays of color, foliage, and texture. School areas that abut residential areas were planted with dense screening vegetation to provide a visual and sound buffer for the neighborhood. Vegetable and herb gardens adjacent to the kitchen would serve both horticultural and culinary programs.
