Replacement school for the Tacoma School District

This very thematic school design was inspired by a mountain to the sea concept. This was accomplished by using upland plantings on the eastern portion of the site with berms and aspen trees as a metaphor for the mountains. The mountain outdoor classroom areas were defined by large peeled logs for seating. The flow of the pedestrians through the site is from the upper area, into a concrete amphitheater. At the center of the amphitheater is a stage that acts as the metaphor for the river/ runnel source that flows through the building, across the play court and out to Puget Sound.
